UPDATE: FRESH MEAT OPEN RECRUITMENT PERIOD ENDS JULY 31ST!
Have you always wanted to skate derby? We would love to have you! But, for the safety of our new trainees (aka Fresh Meat), we need to do a bit of population control. We’ve realized that we can do better training and have more fun if we bring in new skaters as a group, and help them build the skills they need together. For that reason, we will be accepting new skaters at Fresh Meat practice until the end of July, and then closing recruitment for a couple months.
What does this mean? If you’re desperate to be a Dame, show up at Fresh Meat practice at the Charlottesville Armory at 7pm on either Wednesday July 21st or 28th. If you can’t make it then, you’ll have another shot to come out and join us in a few months. Just keep watching this site for updates. The Charlottesville Derby Dames is a not-for-profit group comprised of human creatures who love to skate and are willing to work hard to be competitors in the planet some call “Roller Derby World”. If you are here – the stars have aligned to make you put on some skates, accept some pain, wear the gear, and have a blast with some fantabulous humans. All you have to do is show up and give it a shot.
Who Are We Looking For?
- 19+ year-old women interested in becoming a Derby Dame
- Experienced Coaches who are willing to learn all about Derby
- Ladies or Guys interested in reffing for us
- Other derby leagues to be our friends (and future competition)
- Sponsors
- Someone willing to give us a larger space to skate for extra practices and future bouts
- Community charities that could use some extra help.
Practices
The Dames practice on most Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. We welcome skaters from other teams who want to practice with us, although we do require that you have USARS insurance! To get the most recent practice times and locations, please be sure to email us first.
Wednesday Practice (aka Fresh Meat Practice)
Please note: Recruitment is open through the end of July! After July, please contact us to learn more about joining the Dames and when our next recruitment period will begin!
If you’re interested in joining us, you will want to come to the Fresh Meat practice held on Wednesdays at the Charlottesville National Guard Armory. Please be sure to email us to confirm that we are in a period of recruitment. We will also be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Membership and Fees
The first practice is free. Then it is $5 per practice until you make enough practices to be a dues paying member. We have a limited amount of extra skates, pads, and helmets to share – first come, first served so come early!
