2017 – Once a Dame, Always a Dame
Hello Derby Dames, both Fresh and Seasoned,
It’s hard to believe the 2017 season has drawn to a close! What a year it has been. Pull up a chair, settle in, and enjoy our recap of the Charlottesville Derby Dames’ 2017 season.
We kicked off the year celebrating CDD’s Ten Year Anniversary at Fry’s Spring Beach Club. It was quite the affair, at which Jugglenaut’s custom CDD pinball machine was unveiled. It features some of your favorite Dames: Apple Clobber, B-one Bomber, Nacho Baby and Christian Wakeman. We are currently looking for a new home for the pinball machine, so keep an eye out on our social media to see where it is going to pop up next (most likely will be Cocoa & Spice). All funds from the pinball, come back to to the Dames.
Fresh Meat has been revamped and we now have a Boot Camp that meets 2-3 times a week for a month. We also have gear available for new skaters to rent to take home, and a brand new officials training program. This year we have had the highest recruited members yet, with 24 new skating members and 3 new non skating members! Our new bouting skaters from 2017 are: Electrick Slaydee, Thor’s Jammer, Sound a Whip Makes, and Jack of all Blades. There were several transfers to the Dames that have made our league stronger: River Strong, Admiral Mayhem, Rae Gunn, Sarah Jean, Thin Mint, Ruby Rottweiler, and Smack & Cheese. We did have several members retire this year, but as this email says, “Once a Dame, Always a Dame”: The Big Bangarang, Miller-Miller, Apple Clobber, Polly Trauma, Rex Knightly, SparKills, Boom Shake the Room, Pinkerbell, and Deadly Sin (currently on a cross country trip in a van with Personal Space Invader). Our Juniors and Roller Derby at UVa teams have also grown this year to make our league even stronger. Over 15 Juniors skaters in each session and 15 UVa skaters!
Your Dames have traveled far and wide this year! The All Stars, Bruisers and Officials have traveled to Columbia, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia. The Belmont Bruisers made their first trip to ECDX (and won!) and the WFTDA Charter team (with skaters from All Stars and Bruisers) went to D1 Playoffs in Seattle, WA. Stonewallup (announcing) and Le Corbruiseier (NSOing) worked the D2 playoffs/champs in Pittsburgh, PA,, we have shown the roller derby world that our team from a small town in Virginia is something to be reckoned with. Our bouts at Augusta Expo and our beloved Xanadu, brought the excitement of derby home to both old and new fans. The season ended with the WFTDA ranking of 37 out of 335 leagues worldwide.
This year, CDD contributed to numerous local charities: Shelter for Help and Emergency (S.H.E.), Freeze Bullying for Payton, CHIP, and LEAP. The Dames also participated in local fundraising and awareness events for CLAW, SHE 5k, and Pride festival. In the coming year, we are going to spend more time giving back to our community and helping it heal from all of the turmoil our beloved home went through this year.
As the year comes to a close, we would like you to remember your Dames in your end-of-year charitable donations. We will be having a #GivingTuesday campaign on November 28. If you want to participate or encourage your family and friends to help, please follow us on our social media, we are now able to accept donations via Facebook, and share posts to help spread the word. We also have our Network For Good site up until the end of 2017: https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/CDD. We would greatly appreciate any amount no matter how great or small. We have created annual giving levels, and I’ve attached them to this email. We actually will have our very first Platinum Level single sponsor this year! I don’t know what I would do without this person too: Maid Carrion! Thank you, Carrion, for your continued support even though you don’t come to all the practices/meetings/CR events/ALL THE THINGS.
Please feel free to send me any thoughts, concerns, and/or happy derby memories.
Hip Checks and Derby Love,
