Bout recap: Dames vs. Fallout Femmes

March 14th, 2011 | 0 comments

If the Dames’ first bout of the season is any indication, we’re going to have a great year!

The team traveled to Harrisburg, PA on Sunday, March 13 to take on H.A.R.D.’s Fallout Femmes. Running the bench for the Dames: Coach Evil Jinius and Bench Manager Crashiopeia, who led the Dames to victory, 197-114.

It was a high penalty game on both sides, with one player ejected on the Femmes side and two Dames in danger of the same due to major penalties.

Highlights for the Dames: On the track for the first time in a year and a half, following her recovery from a serious shoulder injury in 2009, was MatilDa molish. Matilda had the last jam of the night for the Dames and we were so proud to see her back on that jam line again. Demo Plan, PR PunishHer and Jane SkEyre bouted for the first time but played like vets. Apple Clobber, who just keeps getting better and better, jumped the apex not once, but twice. B-One Bomber “danced all over the track” and earned game MVP. Congrats, B-One!!

Congrats to all of our players who were out there on Sunday: Crushin Doll, SparKills, Research and Destroy, Bruta Liza, B-One Bomber, Nilla WasteHer, Jane SkEyre, Ivy Keatmean, Apple Clobber, Demo Plan, PR PunisHer, Kamikashi, Barbie Beretta and MatilDa molish.

Open Skate: Charlottesville Key Center

January 9th, 2011 | 1 comment

Charlottesville may not have its own roller skating rink but we do have a place where you can skate – for free – on the weekends.  Charlottesville Parks and Recreation has opened the downtown Key Center (800 E. Market St.) to skaters on Saturdays from 1-3pm and Sundays from 1-6pm for a free Open Skate!  They supply the skates (if you want protective gear you’ll need to bring that yourself), the music and even some snacks!  This is a great program and it’s open to everyone so we encourage all of our fans, Fresh Meat and followers to go get their skate on at the Key Center.

WHAT:  Free Open Skate

WHERE:  Charlottesville Key Center, 800 E. Market St.   (Map)

WHEN:  Saturdays, 1-3pm; Sundays, 1-6pm*

*These days/times can sometimes change if the Key Center is closed for other events.  We recommend you call the Key Center at (434) 293-8273 to verify they will be open on the day you’d like to skate.

Fresh Meat Recruitment: Happening NOW!

January 3rd, 2011 | 4 comments

The Charlottesville Derby Dames need YOU! We are looking for all levels of skaters and non-skaters to join our team.

Women AND Men over the age of 19 are invited to attend our next open Fresh Meat practice from 7-9pm on Wed., January 5 at the Charlottesville National Guard Armory . Fresh Meat practices are a no contact/no hitting skating practice for our newest members.

Can’t skate? That’s ok: veteran Dames and our Fresh Meat coach will be on site to teach you. We’ll even provide all of the equipment you need to practice with us. And your first Fresh Meat practice is FREE! Subsequent practices are $5 each.

DO YOU ALREADY INLINE SKATE? If so, bring your skates and talk to our referees about joining the Dames as a ref. Reffing is open to both men and women; guys, this is a great way to get involved in roller derby!

Act fast because our next Fresh Meat cycle is open only through the month of January. Attend any (or all) of the following practices to qualify as Fresh Meat with the Dames. Once this cycle closes, you will not have another opportunity to join the Dames until April 2011.

Winter 2011 FRESH MEAT OPEN PRACTICES (all at the Charlottesville National Guard Armory):

January 5, 2010 – 7-9pm
January 12, 2010 – 7-9pm
January 19, 2010 – 7-9pm
January 26, 2010 – 7-9pm

Come dressed to work out (bring a water bottle or sports drink because you’re going to sweat!). Most of all, though, come ready to have fun!
